Preview

The Detroit Tigers welcome the Chicago White Sox to Comerica Park on Saturday, August 15, for a 1:10 PM ET afternoon game. Troy Melton takes the ball for Detroit against Chicago's Anthony Kay in what figures to be an intriguing pitching matchup between two arms that both sides are still evaluating at this stage of the season. With the AL Central picture always worth watching when these two division rivals meet, every game between Detroit and Chicago carries stakes worth paying attention to.

Probable Pitchers: Troy Melton vs. Anthony Kay

Melton gets the start for the Tigers and this is an opportunity for the right-hander to stake a claim and show what he can bring to this rotation. Specific ERA and win-loss figures aren't available heading into this one, but that almost adds intrigue — Melton is pitching to prove something, and that kind of motivation can translate on the mound. The Tigers need answers from their starting staff, and Melton has a chance to provide one on Saturday afternoon in front of a home crowd.

On the other side, Anthony Kay gets the nod for Chicago. Kay is a veteran presence who knows how to pitch to contact and work through a lineup. Detroit's offense will need to be patient and look for pitches to drive if Kay settles in and starts finding his spots.

Keys to Watch at Comerica Park

McGonigle and the Middle of the Order

Kevin McGonigle slides into the cleanup spot, batting fourth, which tells you the Tigers see something in the young shortstop's bat. That's a big ask, but it's also a big opportunity. How McGonigle handles that pressure in the heart of the lineup is one of the more compelling storylines to track all afternoon.

Torkelson Looking to Bounce Back

Spencer Torkelson bats sixth, and the former top overall pick is always one of the more closely watched hitters in this lineup. A productive day for Tork would go a long way toward building the kind of sustained momentum Detroit needs from that position.

Murakami and Chicago's Power Threat

Munetaka Murakami batting second for Chicago is not something Detroit's pitching staff can sleep on. The Japanese star has legitimate power, and if Melton leaves pitches over the heart of the plate, Murakami has the bat speed to make him pay. Keeping him off base early is critical.

Báez in Center Field

Javier Báez moving into center field and batting eighth is a lineup construction worth monitoring. His athleticism makes the defensive alignment workable, but his contributions at the plate from the eight-hole could prove quietly valuable if the Tigers are grinding out runs late.

Prediction

This one sets up as a competitive afternoon game at Comerica Park. The lineup is stacked with enough diversity — Torres at the top, McGonigle in the four-hole, and Torkelson looking to do damage — that Detroit's offense has real upside. If Melton can pitch efficiently through five or six innings and the bullpen holds serve, the Tigers take this one at home. Detroit wins, 4-2.
